SPMS Math Placement Protocol

All incoming and currently enrolled students (except those currently taking an accelerated course) will take the Math placement exam each spring (or upon enrollment for students new to the district).  The following multiple criteria will be used to determine course Math placement for the 2017-2018 school year:

 

 

SPMS ACCELERATED AND HONORS MATH PLACEMENT CRITERIA

Students must meet 3 of the 4 below criteria for acceptance into Accelerated Math or Honors Math:

6th Grade

Accelerated

Math

  1. Math Placement Exam: 90% or higher.
  2. 5th Grade CAASPP Mathematics Scale Score between 2640-2700. 
  3. Teacher Recommendation of at least 13 (out of 15.)
  4. End of the Year Math Benchmark: 90% or higher.

6th Grade

Honors

Math

  1. Math Placement Exam Placement: 80% or higher.
  2. 5th Grade CAASPP Mathematics Achievement Level of 4.
  3. Teacher Recommendation of at least 11 (out of 15.)
  4. End of the Year Math Benchmark: 80% or higher.

7th & 8th Grade

Accelerated

Math

  1. Math Placement Exam: 88% or higher for 7th grade and 80% for 8th grade.
  2. CAASPP Mathematics Scale Score in upper half of a 4 from prior year.
  3. Teacher Recommendation of at least 13 (out of 15.)  
  4. Minimum 4-quarter average of 4.0 GPA in Honors Math.

7th & 8th Grade

Honors

Math

  1. Math Placement Exam: 70% or higher.
  2. CAASPP Mathematics Achievement Level of 4 from prior year.
  3. Teacher Recommendation of at least 11 (out of 15.)
  4. Minimum 4-quarter average of 4.0 GPA in Standard Math.

 

  1. A student and his/her parent/guardian who disagree with the placement of the student may appeal the decision to the school Principal or designee within the first 10 days of the new school year. The Principal or designee shall decide whether or not to overrule the placement determination within 10 school days of receiving the appeal.  The decision of the Principal or designee shall be final.
  2. If space permits, students who do not qualify may be enrolled in Accelerated or Honors Math courses based on a consideration of the objective measures specified in the placement criteria.  Additionally, teachers and/or counselors who have personal knowledge of the students’ academic abilities will be consulted to determine if placement in Accelerated or Honors Math courses is in the best interest of the students in question.  If they choose, parents may opt their child out of the higher level courses.
  3. The Middle School will provide at least one placement checkpoint within the first month of the school year to ensure accurate placement and permit reevaluation of individual student progress. All mathematics teachers will assess the mathematics placements for each student assigned to the teacher’s mathematics class. The teacher’s evaluation will take into consideration factors which may include, but are not limited to, the student’s classroom assignments, quizzes, tests, classroom participation, and any comments provided by the student, the student’s parent/legal guardian, and/or the student’s other teachers regarding the student’s mathematics placement. Based on the evaluation, the teacher will then recommend that the student remain in the current mathematics placement or be transferred to another mathematics placement, in which case the teacher shall specify the mathematics course or level recommended for the student.
