From the Parent Institute : Productive Summers Begin with Structure It's fine to let your child relax over summer vacation. But that doesn't mean her good school-year habits should fly completely out the window! To help her recharge and stay productive, give your child: Structure. Don't abandon all your routines just because the final bell has rung. Continue enforcing a reasonable bedtime (although making it a bit later is fine) and limit her screen time. Also insist that your child do her chores. Opportunities to learn. Research shows that kids' academic skills--especially in reading and math--can decline dramatically over summer break. But don't let it happen to your child! From trips to the library or museum to playing reasoning games online, find ways for her to keep her brain primed for learning. Ways to stay fit. A summertime couch potato can quickly become a school-year slacker. So encourage your child to get regular exercise and fresh air with a daily walk or bike ride. They also reinforce skills that inspire learning and thinking. Your child will benefit from: Following directions. Middle schoolers need to practice this skill. Just ask any middle school teacher! Lessons in logic, reasoning and strategy. For success at many games, your child will need to decide which move to make or card to play. This kind of decision making is helpful when she takes higher math and science classes. Reading, writing, spelling and vocabulary. Some board games are all about creating words and word puzzles. For others, your child must read and understand questions and clues. Creating and spotting patterns. Studies show success in recognizing, remembering and applying patterns is directly related to success in math.
