On Tuesday, June 1, 2021, the South Pasadena Unified School District held a ribbon cutting event to celebrate the completion of the historic SPMS Arts Building. The renovated space with state-of-the-art features now offers a black box theatre, a visual arts classroom, and a flex lab. All renovations were funded through Measure SP, passed in 2018, which allows for $98 million in bonds to fund necessary improvements for schools.
During the event, Deni Valderrama of Balfour Beatty, the project contractor, presented a $500 check to the SPMS Arts Program. Middle school student, Madelin Rentmeester, provided cello accompaniment while members of the public toured the space. The new SPMS Arts Building will welcome students at the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year.
