Congratulations to the SPMS Math Team that recently won several awards at the Alhambra Mark Keppel Math Field Day. Following are the results of the competition:

 

Matherhorn: 1st - Cadence Ni, Kimy Zhang; 3rd - Will Schwartz, Jerry Zhang
Gallery Walk: 1st - Sarah Kano
Approximath: 1st - Zoe Chen, Abigail Kim, Claire Mao, Ian Shyu; 3rd - Paxton Kim, Qiran Liu, Fredrik Wang, Ray Yoon
Jeopardy: 1st - Brett Chang, Linus Eisenberg, Erik Kolodji, Jesse Li
Final Round: 1st - Alexa Chang, Brett Chang, Linus Eisenberg, Jerry Zhang

 

For the Gallery Walk event, students were given 45 minutes, art supplies, a rubric to integrate art and the math topic of linear functions. No words of explanation were allowed; the art was required to reveal the mathematics. Team member, Sarah Kano, earned first place for her entry (shown above).

 

The team has been earning accolades throughout the school year in several different contests and is comprised of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Kudos to all the student participants and their advisors—Eric Aispuro, Katy Chen, Dean McCoy, and Douglas Buhler.
