On Saturday, October 15, 2022, female math students from eleven middle schools in the Pasadena area gathered at La Canada High School for the annual WISMO (Women in STEM Math Olympiad) competition.
The Tiger Cubs from South Pasadena Middle School roared to victory, taking first, second, and third place in the team events and shining brightly in the individual categories. Teams consisted of four girls who were challenged by three rounds of increasingly difficult questions. The questions were similar to those the students will see later in the year in the International Math Olympiad and Mathcounts.
The first place team was Zoe Chen, Emma Hayashi, Chloe Kim, and Abigail Kim. In second place was the team of Lacie Zhou, Cadence Ni, Noel English, and Heather Galt. The third place team was Karissa Oniciuc, Deborah Chong, Cora Kung, and Hannah Chan.
Individually, Abigail Kim and Lacie Zhou ranked first and second in the eighth grade. Deborah Chong was second in the seventh grade. SPMS swept the sixth grade competition with Amalia Lopez, Kimi Fong, and Uma Chakraborty taking the top three spots.
The students are coached by math teachers Eric Aispuro, Katy Chen, and Allyson Wong. Go, Tiger Cubs!
