2018 CAASPP Scores Place South Pasadena Unified in Top Five California K-12 Unified Districts
Four-year Trend Report Shows Significant Gains in ELA and Math Results
SOUTH PASADENA, Calif. (October 2, 2018) – Recently, the California Department of Education released detailed 2017-2018 California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) results for students in grades three through eight and grade eleven. A look at the numbers over the past four years reveals that South Pasadena Unified has experienced a seven percent gain in the number of students meeting and exceeding ELA standards (84 percent total) and a five percent gain in the number of students meeting and exceeding Math standards (79 percent total). These results place South Pasadena students in the top five of all K-12 unified school districts in California.
“We’re proud of our students’ results,” said South Pasadena Unified’s Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services Christiane Gervais. “Teachers have successfully implemented standards-aligned curricula and strategies over the last several years that are positively impacting students’ academic growth and progress. With the help of supportive parents, administrators, teachers and staff, students continue to see positive outcomes.”
The assessments for ELA and mathematics are based on California’s challenging academic standards, which include the ability to write clearly, think critically and solve problems. 2017-2018 reports on English language arts statewide assessments revealed a one percent increase from the prior year with 84 percent of students meeting and exceeding standards District-wide. Math assessment scores held steady with 79 percent of students meeting and exceeding standards.
“CAASPP is one way that we measure how students are learning,” said Superintendent Geoff Yantz. “Students continue to excel in learning the state standards while District-wide, strategic goals keep our team of teachers, staff and administrators focused on planning the best ways for students to succeed.”
In July, parents and guardians received individual student score reports. The reports detail an overall score for each subject and information for how each child performed in different skill areas associated with English language arts/literacy and mathematics. If a child tested in 2016 and 2017, the score report presents three years of data, which allows parents and guardians to view a child’s progress over time.
